Shepard's Journal
Willowbark Café
Carnival

You and I have both seen them -- they've become popular as a style element on many petz-sites. Some people use them for decorations, others use them as clever ways to hide the fact that the petz in question can't crop down without looking distorted or choppy (this is common with white-haired dogz and catz).

So what are they? They are petz pictures that have snazzy outline! In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a variety of styles; starting with the most simple among them:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Style I: Transparent & Dotted
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. Open the image of your petz that you want to outline

Oi! You can ignore the top part of the picture that reads 'please...' ~ I have a tendency to give pictures offbeat names XD

2. Click on the magic wand tool and adjust the settings so that Tolerance (0) and Feather (4).

A Word About Feathering:

You can adjust the feathering number as you please depending on the picture you are working with. If you are looking for a larger outline (further out), then set the bar higher. If you are looking for a small outline (closer in towards the body) then set the bar lower. Personally, I find that anywhere between 2-5 is all that's needed. In this tutorial, I use the happy medium, which seems to work better for Sonwa's image :)

3. Click anywhere in the white area around the petz. You should see heeps of ants that look like they're in the wrong spot.

4. To correct the problem, simply invert the selection (Ctrl+Shift+I).

5. From this point, we need to "capture" the ants frozen in one place. To do so, take a screenshot. For many keyboards all you have to do is press the "print screen" button. Paste it into PSP by pressing (Ctrl+V).

6. Isolate the part of the image you want by selecting (and cropping) your petz as close to the dots as you can. Try and leave one or two pixels of white space available for later. Use the zoom feature if you feel the need to.

7. Add any effects to your picture that you would like in the final product, such as eye-sparkles, etc. Notice that in the picture below, I actually cut out the background as well. Depending on your method of making images transparent, you may or may not need this step.

8. Now all that's left is to save (or export) as a transparent image and enjoy!
